DIY Done Right: How to Tile Sticker Around the Toilet

Bathrooms are the most popular place to install floor stickers, but they come with the slight inconvenience of working around the toilet. Good news, this article will show you just how simple stickering around your toilet can be! We've even included a video tutorial to help you through it. Keep reading to check it out!

There are plenty of reasons to be daunted by the idea of stickering around your toilet. For one, it’s yucky. Doesn’t matter how clean your toilet is, it’s still somehow just yucky—and crouching down on your hands and knees to come cheek-to-cheek with that big ol’ porcelain bowl is, well, it might trigger some unpleasant memories of early pregnancy or coming home from an over-indulgent night out.

Aside from the ickiness of putting your face so close to where butts go, when it comes to stickering around the toilet, there is also the more important matter of how you’re going to do it.

You could remove the toilet altogether and sticker the floor beneath the base. You’ll get a reliably clean look in the end, but you’ll have to deal with the wholly unnecessary labor of uninstalling and reinstalling a toilet. For a temporary design solution like tile stickers, that effort is simply not worth it.

So how do you trim your stickers to make sure you get even, uniform lines around the base of your toilet? Easy, just follow the Quadrostyle method!

Put The Ruler Away

The most obvious way to get your stickers to fit around your toilet base is to measure, trace, and trim. Easy enough when it comes to right angles, but this method is actually a lot trickier when it comes to the often curved edges of a toilet base.

Tracing out the perfect arc in your stickers is kind of a guessing game and can lead to sloppy results, especially if you are using tile stickers and need to make sure adjacent stickers match up.

The way we recommend stickering around the toilet base doesn’t actually involve any measuring at all.

Step-by-Step: Stickering Around the Toilet

You don’t need any special equipment to install tile stickers around the toilet. You’ll be able to make do with the same tools you would normally use for installation.

Here’s all that you’ll need:

  • A pair of scissors
  • A razor blade or utility knife
  • Something to smooth stickers as you apply, like a cloth

Once you’ve gathered your tools, follow the instructions below to get perfect, trimmed-to-size stickers around your toilet in minutes. Watch this video tutorial from Gabrielle, the founder of Quadrostyle, as a guide to help you visualize each step.

Step 1: Start by applying the straight edge

Peel off a small section of the sticker backing and align the sticker to your tile. Use your cloth to smooth out air bubbles as you apply the sticker up until it touches the base of the toilet.

Step 2: Cut a straight line through the center of the sticker and remove the loose sticker backing

Line up the center of your sticker and cut a straight line through it. Then, cut off the loose section of sticker backing. This will make it easier to work with the part of the sticker that remains to be applied.

Step 3: Make angled cuts around the base of the toilet

From the center cut of your sticker, make angled cuts toward the floor as you wrap around the base of your toilet. Continue to smooth your sticker onto the floor along the way. When you’re done, you should be left with what looks like a bunch of triangles jutting up from the base of the toilet.

This part can be tough to visualize, so be sure to watch the video above to get a clear understanding of what we mean here.

Step 4: Trim the excess

All that’s left to do now is take your razor blade or utility knife and slice around the base of the toilet. The excess sticker will pluck off easily, leaving a clean, even edge!

Step 5: Put on the finishing touches

Do a final go-over of your stickers, making sure that each edge is firmly pressed into the tile. Loose edges may catch dust or debris and unstick more easily.

PRO TIP: For extra assurance that your stickers will stay in place, you can also add silicone caulking around the base of your toilet.

Conclusion

You can save time and effort when applying Quadrostyle stickers around your toilet by following our installation method rather than measuring and cutting in advance.

Note that this method isn’t just for installing around the toilet. You can use these steps to install around any curved obstacle or wall. It also works just as well with floor panels as it does with tile stickers.

This is the best way to ensure an even edge around your toilet that will look clean and give the impression of professionally installed tiles. Now that you know how to do it, start shopping for the stickers that will give your bathroom the character it needs!
